Paynesville is a small town located in the heart of the Gippsland Lakes. It is a mecca for boating, a sanctuary for birds and a home to art galleries.
In conjunction with SMEC Urban, Village Well was engaged by East Gippsland Shire to conduct a community and stakeholder visioning process and prepare a Place Making Roadmap for the Paynesville Town Centre Structure Plan.
One of the key recommendations of the Roadmap was a mainstreet blitz. With support from the Shire, Bendigo Bank and resources
provided by the Paynesville Business and Tourism Association, the community spent two weeks brightening the mainstreet and
foreshore.
Activities undertaken include:
- The installation of planters built and installed by the Men’s Shed
- Power poles painted
- Mosaic inlays in the footpaths
- The installation of new seating
- The installation of a dolphin sculpture beside the public toilets (2006 Commonwealth Games fish)
Over 1000 hours of labour was volunteered by the entire town with the blitz ending with a celebration on the foreshore.
