The inner and middle northern suburbs of Melbourne are changing as gentrification occurs. Given Preston’s proximity to Melbourne’s CBD and the changing nature of the area, Preston Market identified the opportunity to capitalise on this changing demographic and shift in the market without losing the essence of the Market and the families that visit because of its price and value.

Village Well was engaged by the Preston Market Developments to work with the Preston Market community including the owners, traders and the Preston Market Advisory Committee to create a Place Story for the Market. The Place Story sought to capture the essence of the Market; its history, its future and the people and place that make the market a unique and vibrant destination.

Using ideas generated by the Preston Market traders, Village Well has proposed a range of placemaking opportunities that aimed to deliver the visions set out in the Place Story, including the redesign of the food court. Village Well developed the concept design and layout, working closely with Waratah Design to implement the design on ground.

The new food court successfully embodies the new positioning of Preston market, while maintaining the quintessential market feel. The project demonstrates how a small activation projects can dramatically enhance the public realm experience.

During this time, Village Well also worked closely with 8 traders to develop Visual Merchandising Action Plans that included branding, store layout and potential suppliers.
