ANU’s Union Court Project was formed as part of a long term strategic planning process to strengthen ANU’s position as a world class university. Developing a campus experience to match and enhance its reputation for academic excellence was seen as key to attracting and retaining the best students and staff, and Union Court was selected as its first project of this ongoing journey.
Placemaking formed a key starting point of this ambitious transformative project, as the project team recognised the importance of starting with people, place and public realm experience, rather than simply building disconnected built forms.
Village Well’s role was to develop a place story, establish experiences for various layers within Union Court and provide key placemaking directions and recommendations. These directions will be used to inform the Urban Design Framework.
As part of the engagement Village Well conducted think tanks, kitchen table conversations and study tour, which enabled Village Well to develop a deeper understanding of place and facilitate a better understanding of placemaking.
Village Well will continue to work on subsequent stages of Union Court project to ensure that the placemaking approach is embedded into design and programming of Union Court.
